Firefighters rushed to the 300 block of W. Third Street around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 22, where they battled heavy smoke and flames, according to emergency responders. Crews with Squad 27 were first on the scene, working quickly to knock down the fire, while firefighters from Quint 27 used a ground ladder to rescue a resident trapped on a balcony. Multiple rescues were made, officials said.

The building has been deemed uninhabitable due to smoke damage. Displaced residents were taken to Borough Hall at 63 W. Fourth Street, which was opened as a temporary shelter until Montgomery County services and the Red Cross could arrange short-term housing.

Bridgeport Mayor Beth Jacksier praised first responders and volunteers for their swift action.

“The emergency response from the Borough of Bridgeport, Bridgeport Police, and Bridgeport Fire Department was efficient, and it is thanks to them that most everyone is able to move onto the next steps in this process,” Jacksier said in a statement.

The mayor urged the public to support fire victims by donating to Growing Bridgeport Together, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Financial assistance will allow the organization to provide gift cards to those affected so they can purchase necessities, she said. Donations can be sent via:
